Upset Congressional Election Creates Divided Congress

The September Congressional election results have just been announced, and minor parties have made major gains, mostly at the expense of the RBP.

At 12:01 AM EST today, the Department of State released the official September Congressional election results. The outcome was shocking to most onlookers, with the Workers’ Party of Redmont taking 3 seats while the Redmont Beach Party was reduced from its outright House majority earlier in the prior term to a mere 2 seats.

Minor parties served as the major beneficiaries of this election, with a total of 6 parties holding seats in this Congress, up from just three after the conclusion of July’s Congressional election. Among the winners of this election are the New Alliance, which maintains its House seat as well as its Senate seat, proving itself to be a persistent new force in Redmontian politics, and the Galactic Empire of Redmont, which makes a triumphant return to government after months with no elected officials. The Party, which recently renewed its electoral coalition with the Workers’ Party, also regained its House seat this election after the untimely resignation of Former Deputy Speaker Rubilubi55.

Arguably the biggest winner of this election was the Freedom Coalition, previously called the Eastern Prosperity Sphere, which managed to earn not just one, but two seats in the House, electing Anthony_Org and Vernicia, the latter of whom won with only a single first preference vote, and narrowly lost her race for a seat in the Senate. The Freedom Coalition is a self-described conservative and libertarian party, and is associated with business conglomerate Mezimori. TFC is likely to position itself as an ally to the right of the RBP.

Discussions and negotiations for the upcoming Speaker election are no doubt already taking place. The left-wing WPR and TP are likely to choose a candidate from amongst themselves to put forward, while the relatively right-leaning RBP and TFC may choose to ally themselves to put forward a front against the WPR’s bloc with a Speaker candidate of their own, potentially including the GER as well. Scassany (NA) and Multiman155 (IND) would be the deciding votes in this scenario. Either Smami or girlfailcoded are likely to be WPR’s Speaker candidate of choice. Other likely candidates may include RealImza (RBP), Vernicia (TFC), and zLost (GER), with the latter having served as Speaker of the House in January of this year.

The Senate has returned to a state of relative normalcy after the WPR domination of the previous term. 1950minecraft (WPR) and DocTheory (RBP) were re-elected to their seats, with Inknet (IND) taking the third seat in a surprise turn of events, over big names such as Vernicia (TFC) and Jesseya (TLO). This leaves the Senate with one WPR member, two RBP members, one member of NA, and two independents. It is likely that Senate President Pepecuu (IND) will be re-elected to her position.

This situation is developing and likely to receive more coverage in the future.
