SKP-ALP coalition gets 7 seats while Labour-led coalition is effectively reduced to 4 (down from 5 after electing their member as Speaker, who has to remain apolitical and only vote by breaking ties); the first Alexandrian government is formed.
Dartanboy’s SKP managed to shut Labour out of government after a controversial election season. While not reaching the level of dominance that was initially expected of them, it’ll be hard for the opposition to contest the SKP.
The Sovereign Kingdom Party, which has reached a size of 50 members, was the largest actor in the election full of small parties. The SKP has been heavily litigious, playing a part in the filing of 3 lawsuits throughout the course of this election.
While SKP was initially projected to win 6-7 seats, Labour’s decision to form an electoral alliance with the Greens and APS (running their candidates on the Labour ticket) limited SKP to only 5 seats. This Labour-led electoral alliance, calling itself the Redwood coalition, won 5 seats total. This socialist coalition banded together in the late stages of the election because the D’hondt system used by Alexandria favors larger parties and they believed that working together would win them more seats.
Redwood and the SKP each receiving 5 seats created the conditions for the Alexandrian Liberty Party to find themselves to be the determining factor in this election. The ALP merged with another small party midway through the election as they slowly and steadily built their base of voters. While they did receive criticism for a series of offensive political cartoons they released, the ALP managed to receive 2 seats in the nation’s first parliament. They then joined forces with the SKP and negotiated to get the Ministries of Trade and Finance and of Foreign Affairs.
Even before coalition negotiations finished, the Conservatives were able to get Labour MP MangoJuulPods elected to the Speakership. While this may seem contradictory to those unfamiliar with the Westminster system, the Alexandrian constitution mandates that the speaker remain apolitical and only vote to break ties. This was done to effectively take a seat away from Redwood coalition, bringing the seat total to 7-4 from 7-5.
The Conservative coalition will likely bring forward large amounts of legislation in the coming days, as they have promised to fix the nation left behind by the interim government. They’ll pass these measures with ease, while the opposition will fiercely attempt to stop them. Additionally, the Conservatives will be aggressively looking for cracks in the Redwood coalition so they can reach the supermajority required for the constitutional reform they’ve promised.
