It appears that the left is divided again. Instead of choosing the leftist candidate, former speaker MissAndrist (WPR Chair), the Representatives of GER voted in favor of Bezzergeezer (LfR) as the speaker for the next term. Liberty for Redmont currently controls the same number of seats as the WPR; however, they now hold the speakership with 6 votes out of 11.
Representative MissAndrist received the votes of her party, the WPR, as well as the vote of Representative Izzy (IND), while GER, LfR, and Representative Pepecuu (RRP) voted for now-Speaker Bezzergeezer. GER in turn retained the position of deputy speaker.
The election of Bezzergeezer may be considered worrying to some. While experienced in this position, having served three times before, Bezzergeezer also has a controversial history. He dissolved the House at the pressure of the President during his first term as speaker and was involved in a coup during his second term.
Representative MissAndrist congratulated Speaker Bezzergeezer on his election and expressed hope for cooperation with Liberty for Redmont. The apparent crumbling of the previous WPR-GER coalition could potentially create issues for the 1950minecrafter (WPR) Administration. The President ran on a joint ticket with the leader of GER, Yeet_Boy, who serves as the Vice-President.
Meanwhile, after the election of Bezzergeezer, former representative RylandW (previously GER, now WPR) changed parties. Having been unsuccessful in the March Congressional Elections, RylandW left GER and joined the WPR. The Reveille Times reached out to RylandW for comment.
“I am absolutely appalled that the Galactic Empire (GER) decided to support Bezzergeezer in the speaker election and is once again rekindling its relationship with a party that does not have the best interests of everyday Redmontians in mind. I am unhappy with the GER’s recent decisions regarding the elections. This, coupled with internal conflict, as well as feeling more welcomed by other colleagues of mine, is why I have left the party,” said the former representative.
During his time in Congress, RylandW was in favor of the leftist GER-WPR Coalition, which governed with a majority of 6 prior to the March House election. “I hope for a future in which the needs of every Redmontian are put above personal gain and political strategy. Redmont is a place where people should be cared for,” he added.
Having lost both their majority and their coalition, the WPR openly declared a willingness to work with everyone from LfR to RRP to GER. “The people have spoken. Let’s make this a productive Congress,” said the WPR Chairwoman in a press release following the election of Bezzergeezer to the speakership.
