At 8:26 PM EST, the government announced that the referendum on the Election Foundations Act has failed.
The vote was an overwhelming rejection of the bill as it is currently written, with 41 nay votes (87.2%) compared to just six aye votes (12.7%).
The main contention of the bill is its removal of electoral law from the Constitution, and removing its requirement of a supermajority in both Congress and by referendum to be changed. The bill’s proponents cited a popular dislike of the single transferable vote (STV) system, and argued that this was a way to make changing it easier. The bill’s opponents, however, argued that there are better ways to go about changing the voting method than what they view as a weakening of the integrity of Redmont’s democracy.
It is expected that Congress will consider an altered version of the bill.
The Reveille Times will keep readers up to date on any changes to electoral law.
